For more than 10 years, cancer has ranked among the top three healthcare needs of Calvert County residents.

In 2020, we engaged a consulting firm to complete a study focused on cancer care. The study was aimed at determining how CalvertHealth, as an independent community hospital, should respond to the cancer needs of its community.

One of the first recommendations was to find a National Cancer Institute Center that could partner with our exceptional oncologists and the care team here at CalvertHealth. An NCI-Designated Cancer Center has met rigorous standards for transdisciplinary, state-of-the-art research focused on developing new and better approaches to preventing, diagnosing, and treating cancer. There are only 71 cancer centers in the United States and only 53 of those are Comprehensive Cancer Centers. Duke University Hospital is currently ranked among the top 25 cancer hospitals in the country.

We are honored that we will be an affiliate of Duke Health’s Cancer Care Network, bringing innovative research and leading-edge treatments to our patients. A relationship with an NCI center gives CalvertHealth physicians and staff access to continual education on the latest thinking in cancer care from the experts who are doing the research and will give us the capacity to bring clinical trials to our local community.

Among many other benefits, it will give our providers easy access to second opinions from all types of cancer subspecialists working at the academic level and will link these specialists with our oncology team for tumor boards and cancer conferences where patient treatment planning is discussed.

What we’re building isn’t as important as who we are building it for – the hundreds of newly diagnosed cancer patients treated every year and the thousands of cancer survivors who need ongoing care and support.
